It's not move fast and break things if "break things" includes "lights out for all of us".6/24/2024 It's so weird that I'm the one shouting from the rooftops to be careful about AI.
I'm a digital nomad who regularly drives motorcycles in third world countries and who dropped out of uni to take on the lucrative and secure career of starting charities. I am constantly poking the bear online by saying what I really think, consequences be damned. My personality is risk-taking. I think most people worry too much. But it's different to risk my life compared to risking literally everybody's life. Risking my death is different from risking trillions of people being tortured with no escape. So, coming from a risk-taking founder - I think the AI labs are being insanely reckless right now. I think I get Sam. He and I are similar in many ways. You don't start orgs if you're a timid soul. But OpenAI isn't like any other Bay Area startup. It could be creating a new intelligent species and he and all other AI lab leaders need to up their safety game. They need to be the improbable - cautious entrepreneurs. The stakes are too high. It's not move fast and break things if "break things" includes "lights out for all of us".
