Smart people are often rather dumb about AI
Specifically, smart people tend to hang out with other smart people. So they say silly things like "AIs aren't nearly as smart as humans" Because Claude is dumb compared to themselves & their friend Simon. Just don't talk about how many languages Claude speaks, or that he's passed the bar, medical exams, MBA exams, can code, and also can read a whole book in seconds. But that's just crystalized intelligence! (aka knowledge) It's not the size of your knowledge base, but what do you do with it that counts. And Claude and ChatGPT aren't as good as that smart person or Simon-from-work at fluid intelligence. I mean, AIs are 99th percentile creativity. Which ain't slouching. But, they're "only" around 100 IQ, a measure of fluid intelligence. But 100 IQ is the median human! And smart people have a hard time getting that because they don't hang around with 100 IQ people much. If you consider yourself a smart person, get yourself out of the bubble by thinking of your high school class. This is the closest most people will get to being around a representative sample. How smart does ChatGPT seem compared to the bottom half of your class? How good at reasoning is Claude compared to the people who did worst in your class? When you look at it that way, it's really easy to see that AIs are currently smarter than about half of people. And if you're not in that 50%, don't get too comfortable. It's going to be smarter than you too soon.
